Bart Hockerman first autocrossed in 1998 and has done so religiously since 2001. What caused him to begin, and why does he continue every chance he gets? “Peer pressure from a friend who said he was a better driver than I was,” explained Hockerman. The two of them haven’t stopped. “He’s my current rival for autocrossing. We’ll drive each other’s cars, and we’re always within less than a tenth of a second of one another.
“Usually, one of us is first and the other one second. When we co-drive each other’s cars, one of us is just a hair over the other one. It doesn’t matter whose car it is; we’re always that close.”
When asked what made him turn to the sport religiously, Hockerman said, “I got that much into it, and when we got a car that was more competitive, it turned from being just a fun thing to do to being ‘I want to do better.’ I started going a lot, and it turned into running all the time when I got the WRX Wagon. That made me go out and buy an ’02 Sedan.”
He went through a couple other cars, then bought a 2005 WRX. “When the ’08 STI came out, I said, ‘That’s my next car.’”
