Subaru Drive Performance WRX Part 4 – Mechanical

DP WRX at Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

THE LAST THREE ISSUES OF DRIVE PERFORMANCE HAVE FOLLOWED ITS WRX PROJECT CAR THROUGH APPEARANCE CHANGES, WHICH INVOLVED READER INPUT ON THE VEHICLE WRAP AS WELL AS THE CHOICE OF WHEELS. ARTICLES AND JOURNAL ENTRIES AT WWW.DRIVEPERFORMANCE.SUBARU.COM HAVE CHRONICLED OUR JOURNEYS WITH THE CAR FROM ITS HOME BASE IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, AS FAR WEST AS UTAH, AS FAR NORTHEAST AS MAINE, AND AS FAR SOUTHEAST AS DAYTONA, FLORIDA.

We’ve been collecting the mechanical parts that we wanted to install on the Drive Performance WRX (DP WRX) for a few months. We’ve pursued the modifications in stages – exterior first, then mechanical and interior.

The mechanical parts that we gathered included:

  • Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) Front Strut Tower Brace (SPT parts number SOA8431130)
  • SPT Lower Chassis Brace (SOA8431120)
  • SPT Cat-Back Exhaust System (D441SFG100)
  • O.Z. Alleggerita HLT wheels (from www.tirerack.com)

We also collected dress-up parts under the hood:

  • SPT Turbo Heat Shield (E771SFG500)
  • SPT Battery Tiedown V2 (SOA3881210)
  • SPT Oil Cap V2 (SOA3881230)

Except for the wheels, all of these parts are available at your Subaru dealer. Their installation was straightforward, and anyone with the correct equipment should be able to do the work. Of course, installation can be done at a Subaru dealer, too. We took the car back to Sommer’s Subaru in Mequon, Wisconsin, to follow the work with our cameras.

Sommer’s Service Technician Matt Hetzel installed everything for this round of modifications in late March 2011.
