Defend a championship. Forge another! Climb a mountain – faster than anyone else!
To all appearances, it might seem like business as usual for the two Subaru Motorsports teams. But nothing is exactly the same as it was last year for either one.
For both Subaru Motorsports teams – Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT USA) and the Subaru rallycross team – change is running rampant for 2014. Let’s see how they fared in 2013 and where they’re going this year.
Third Consecutive Championship In 2013, driver/co-driver David Higgins/Craig Drew fought a nail-biting battle for the Rally America National Championship. Competition particularly from Ken Block/Alex Gelsomino and Antoine L’Estage/Nathalie Richard was keen, with the championship not decided until the finale of the seven rounds at Lake Superior Performance Rally in October. The final points standings don’t indicate how close SRT USA’s rivals actually were.
Consistency and determination by the team contributed to its third driver’s title in three years (the fifth title for Higgins). Still, going into the last event, either Block/Gelsomino or Higgins/Drew would seal the championship with a win.
|Here’s how Higgins/Drew finished in each of the seven events.
|2013 Rally America National Championship
|Sno*Drift Rally, January
|Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, February
|Oregon Trail Rally, May
|Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally, May/June
|New England Forest Rally, July
|Ojibwe Forests Rally, August
|Lake Superior Performance Rally, October
The #75 WRX STI Rally Car SRT USA uses a 5-Door WRX STI as the base for its rally cars. The third-generation Subaru was transformed into the rally beast by Vermont SportsCar, the technical partner to Subaru of America, Inc. for motorsports.
Even though the car is street-legal with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, it doesn’t resemble a stock WRX STI under the skin – anywhere. See the complete rundown of changes made to put together SRT USA’s contender.
Also, see the “Subaru Launch Control” series for more of the SRT USA story.
SRT USA Drivers
Now in his fourth year with SRT USA, Higgins hails from Trefeglwys, Mid Wales, in the United Kingdom, where he runs his family’s driving school. He often makes the flight across the Atlantic to test, race, and make appearances for SRT USA.
Born in 1972, Higgins has won numerous international rally championships besides the last three in the Rally America series.

He’s back! Former SRT USA driver Travis Pastrana returns for the 2014 season. Thirty-year-old Pastrana began his auto racing career driving a Subaru in 2004 and won four straight Rally America titles with SRT USA between 2006 and 2010.
A motocross and X Games athlete, Pastrana will compete behind the wheel of a WRX STI in this year’s X Games. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland.
